it's OK to like stuff

Last week, my brother Miles sent me a video I can’t stop thinking about. It was a deceptively simple argument for freedom of expression, which the speaker boiled down to a single phrase: It’s OK to like stuff.

We’re tough on each other. We’re even harder on ourselves. And that limits us. We hesitate to explore. We decide not to take risks. We let other people decide what we like.

But at the end of the day, our choices should make us happy. They should leave us satisfied.

It’s OK to like stuff.

It takes bravery to choose something that expresses who you are. But that’s what home is all about. It’s a physical expression of you and what you love.

So, go ahead. Paint your living room electric blue if that lights up your day. Put a flock of pink flamingos in your yard if it makes you smile. Maybe pinstripes on your cabinets are what your kitchen needs. There’s no right or wrong, there’s just what you like.

And if the rest of us don’t get it, who cares? Your house isn’t about us. It’s about you.

The only thing that matters is that you feel at home.
